The Fellowship of His Sufferings

"But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the Cup that I am about to drink and be baptized with the Baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to Him, “We are able.”
The Subject of Suffering in Christianity is a Basic Aspect of the Total Package of Salvation and the Christian Maturity Process that every single Christian believer is mandated to go through. The Holy Bible makes it abundantly clear to every seeker of Truth that suffering for the Sake of the Kingdom is beyond any shadow of doubt one of the Greatest Privileges: "And they departed from the presence of the council, REJOICING THAT THEY WERE COUNTED WORTHY TO SUFFER SHAME FOR HIS NAME" (Acts 5:41 KJV). The Depth and Wealth of our Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can never be known until it has been tested therefore suffering for His Sake and for His Kingdom is always such a Thing of Great Joy for every Genuine Christian believer (Jam. 1:2). Simply put, you can never become an Authentic Testimony until you've first of all passed the test.
In his Epistle to the Church in Colossae, Apostle Paul made a remarkable and often misunderstood remark regarding the Sufferings of the Lord Jesus Christ: "I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and FILL UP IN MY FLESH WHAT IS LACKING IN THE AFFLICTIONS OF CHRIST, for the Sake of His Body which is the Church" (Col.1:24).
A superficial glance at this statement often makes the rather overzealous Christians accuse Paul of blasphemy. How could anyone insinuate that the Sufferings or Afflictions of Christ needed completion by a mortal man as if they were inadequate? Before we tar and feather Apostle Paul, we must understand that there is a huge yet subtle difference between the SUBSTITUTION of Christ in Suffering and the EXAMPLE of Christ in Suffering. Apostle Peter expatiated this by stating: "For to this you were called, because CHRIST ALSO SUFFERED FOR US, LEAVING US AN EXAMPLE, THAT YOU SHOULD FOLLOW HIS STEPS" (1 Pet. 2:21 NKJV). What does this imply? On the one hand, the Lord Jesus Christ took our place as our Substitute when He suffered during His Passion Week so that we wouldn't have to. On the other hand, He also suffered persecution, revilement, and slander, modelling as our Example on how to conduct ourselves anytime we are found in a similar situation (1Pet. 2:22-23).
A Comprehensive Understanding of "the Fellowship of His Sufferings..." (Phil. 3:10c) would enable us to discern what Dr Kenneth E. Hagin of blessed memory referred to as "The Way of the Spirit" (Ecc. 11:5a), which refers to the DNA of God concealed in the middle of our daily circumstances. There are Four Fundamental Types of Suffering we are expected to experience as Genuine Christian believers in order to attain Maturity:
1. Trials: This talks about those tests that are orchestrated directly by the Lord God Almighty Himself (1Pet. 5:10). God would never use sickness or infirmities to afflict His children. Hence, the English Term "afflictions" is translated from the Greek Word "thlipsis," which is literally translated "tests or trials."
2. Temptations: This refers to those tests that are directly organized by the devil himself (Jam. 1:13-15). The Reality is that satan tempts Christian believers in order to undermine our Faith and produce the virus known as sin consciousness within, thereby diminishing their confidence in the Lord's Willingness and Ability to preserve them (Lk. 22:31-32).
3. Persecutions: This speaks about those tests that are the result of the direct workings of individuals or people who hinder the Move of God in the life of the Christian believer, whether knowingly or unknowingly (Matt. 5:11-12). Persecution is part and parcel of the Christian Experience. Therefore, every Authentic Christian believer must be willing to embrace it (2 Tim. 3:12).
Never forget that one of the Tests of the man approved of God is the Separation Test.
4. Tribulations: This refers to those tests that are directly instigated by various environmental factors, including hostile administrations, restrictive economic policies, so-called "Acts of God" etc (Jn. 16:33). The Lord Jesus Christ is still directly involved in the Business of building up His Church on the Rock Foundation. As a result of this, the gates of hell can never ever prevail against us (Matt. 16:18). We remain absolutely steadfast as we rest assured that every form of Suffering always turns out for our good, whatever the adversary's plans may be (Gen. 50:20).

La Communion à Ses Souffrances

« Jésus répondit: Vous ne savez pas ce que vous demandez. Pouvez-vous boire la coupe que je vais boire et être baptisés du baptême dont je vais être baptisé? Ils lui dirent: Nous le pouvons. »
Le sujet de la souffrance dans le christianisme est un aspect fondamental du packet complet du salut et du processus de maturité chrétienne que tout croyant est appelé à traverser. La Sainte Bible rend cela abondamment clair pour tout chercheur de vérité : souffrir pour le Royaume est sans l’ombre d’un doute l’un des plus grands privilèges :
« Les apôtres se retirèrent de devant le sanhédrin, joyeux d’avoir été jugés dignes de subir des outrages pour le nom de Jésus » (Actes 5:41 LSG).
La profondeur et la richesse de notre foi en Jésus-Christ ne peuvent jamais être connues tant qu’elles n’ont pas été éprouvées. C’est pourquoi souffrir pour Lui et pour Son Royaume est toujours une grande joie pour tout véritable croyant (Jacques 1:2). En termes simples, tu ne peux jamais devenir un témoignage authentique avant d’avoir d’abord passé le test.
Dans son épître à l’Église de Colosses, l’apôtre Paul fit une remarque remarquable mais souvent mal comprise concernant les souffrances du Seigneur Jésus-Christ :
« Je me réjouis maintenant dans mes souffrances pour vous; et ce qui manque aux souffrances de Christ, je l’achève dans ma chair, pour son corps, qui est l’Église » (Col. 1:24).
Un regard superficiel sur cette déclaration pousse certains chrétiens zélés à accuser Paul de blasphème. Comment quelqu’un pourrait-il insinuer que les souffrances de Christ auraient besoin d’être complétées par un homme mortel, comme si elles étaient insuffisantes? Avant de condamner l’apôtre Paul, nous devons comprendre qu’il existe une grande mais subtile différence entre la substitution de Christ dans la souffrance et l’exemple de Christ dans la souffrance.
L’apôtre Pierre expliqua cela en disant :
« Et c’est à cela que vous avez été appelés, parce que Christ aussi a souffert pour vous, vous laissant un exemple, afin que vous suiviez ses traces » (1 Pi. 2:21 LSG).
Qu’est-ce que cela implique? D’un côté, le Seigneur Jésus-Christ a pris notre place comme substitut lorsqu’Il a souffert durant Sa Passion, afin que nous n’ayons pas à le faire. Mais d’un autre côté, Il a aussi souffert persécution, mépris et calomnie, nous laissant un modèle de conduite lorsque nous nous retrouvons dans une situation semblable (1 Pi. 2:22-23).
Une compréhension approfondie de « la communion de ses souffrances… » (Phil. 3:10) nous permet de discerner ce que le Dr Kenneth E. Hagin, de mémoire bénie, appelait « la voie de l’Esprit » (Eccl. 11:5a), qui désigne l’ADN de Dieu dissimulé au cœur de nos circonstances quotidiennes.
Il existe quatre types fondamentaux de souffrance que nous devons expérimenter en tant que véritables croyants pour atteindre la maturité :
1. Les Épreuves : Il s’agit de ces tests orchestrés directement par le Seigneur Dieu Tout-Puissant Lui-même (1 Pi. 5:10). Dieu n’utilise jamais la maladie ou l’infirmité pour affliger Ses enfants. Ainsi, le terme anglais afflictions est traduit du mot grec thlipsis, qui signifie littéralement « épreuves ou tests ».
2. Les Tentations : Ce sont les tests directement organisés par le diable (Jac. 1:13-15). En réalité, Satan tente les croyants afin de miner leur foi et de produire le virus appelé conscience du péché, diminuant ainsi leur confiance en la volonté et la capacité du Seigneur de les préserver (Luc 22:31-32).
3. Les Persécutions : Elles proviennent de l’action directe de personnes qui s’opposent à l’œuvre de Dieu dans la vie d’un croyant, consciemment ou inconsciemment (Matt. 5:11-12). La persécution fait partie intégrante de l’expérience chrétienne. Par conséquent, tout véritable croyant doit être prêt à l’accepter (2 Tim. 3:12).
N’oubliez jamais qu’un des tests de l’homme approuvé par Dieu est le test de la séparation.
4. Les Tribulations : Ce sont les épreuves directement provoquées par divers facteurs environnementaux, y compris des administrations hostiles, des politiques économiques restrictives, ou encore des « catastrophes naturelles » (Jean 16:33). Le Seigneur Jésus-Christ continue à bâtir Son Église sur le fondement du Rocher. Ainsi, les portes de l’enfer ne prévaudront jamais contre elle (Matt. 16:18). Nous restons fermes, pleinement assurés que toute forme de souffrance concourt toujours à notre bien, quels que soient les plans de l’adversaire (Gen. 50:20).
