The Church Wound You Carry


Matthew 18:15-17 (ESV)

"If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector."

You have been wounded by the church. Someone in the body of Christ hurt you. Maybe a leader. Maybe a friend. Maybe a group. They gossiped about you. They betrayed you. They rejected you. They abused their authority over you. They used scripture to manipulate you. They turned others against you. You left. You walked away. You stopped going. You still believe in God. But you cannot trust His people.

Jesus gives a process for dealing with sin in the church. He says: "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone" (Matthew 18:15). Step one: go to the person. Not to the group. Not to social media. Not to your friends. To the person. Alone. If they listen, you have gained your brother. If they do not, you take one or two others. If they still refuse, you tell the church. If they refuse the church, you treat them as an unbeliever.

This process is not just about restoring the offender. It is about restoring the wounded. When you are the one who has been hurt, you are the one who must take the first step. You must go. You must speak. You must confront. Not to punish. Not to shame. But to gain your brother.

But you did not do this. You walked away. You shut down. You isolated. You told yourself it was not worth the fight. You told yourself you were being humble. You told yourself you were protecting yourself. But you were not being humble. You were being wounded. And the wound is still open.

If you have been wounded by the church, you need to confront it. Not with bitterness. Not with revenge. Not with gossip. But with truth. You need to name the wound. You need to bring it into the light. You need to be honest about what happened. And you need to pursue healing.

Sometimes that means going back. Sometimes it means having a hard conversation. Sometimes it means forgiving someone who has not asked for forgiveness. Sometimes it means leaving—but leaving healed, not bitter.

Here is the truth you need to hear: God loves His church. He knows it is broken. He knows it is full of sinners. He knows you have been hurt. But He has not given up on it. And neither should you.

Prayer:

Lord, I have been wounded by Your church. Someone hurt me deeply. I walked away. I isolated. I carried the wound alone. Forgive me for not confronting it. Forgive me for letting bitterness take root. Help me to bring the wound into the light. Help me to pursue healing. Help me to forgive. And help me to trust Your people again. In Jesus' name, Amen.

"Si ton frère a péché contre toi, va et reprends-le entre toi et lui seul. S'il t'écoute, tu as gagné ton frère. Mais s'il ne t'écoute pas, prends avec toi une ou deux personnes, afin que toute l'affaire soit réglée sur la déclaration de deux ou trois témoins. S'il refuse de les écouter, dis-le à l'Église ; et s'il refuse aussi d'écouter l'Église, qu'il soit pour toi comme un païen et un publicain."

Tu as été blessé par l'Église. Quelqu'un dans le corps de Christ t'a blessé. Peut-être un leader. Peut-être un ami. Peut-être un groupe. Ils ont médit sur toi. Ils t'ont trahi. Ils t'ont rejeté. Ils ont abusé de leur autorité sur toi. Ils ont utilisé l'Écriture pour te manipuler. Ils ont retourné les autres contre toi. Tu es parti. Tu as cessé d'y aller. Tu crois toujours en Dieu. Mais tu ne peux pas faire confiance à Son peuple.

Jésus donne un processus pour traiter le péché dans l'Église. Il dit : "Si ton frère a péché contre toi, va et reprends-le entre toi et lui seul" (Matthieu 18:15). Étape un : va vers la personne. Pas vers le groupe. Pas vers les réseaux sociaux. Pas vers tes amis. Vers la personne. Seul. S'il t'écoute, tu as gagné ton frère. Sinon, tu prends une ou deux personnes. S'il refuse encore, tu le dis à l'Église. S'il refuse d'écouter l'Église, tu le traites comme un incroyant.

Ce processus ne concerne pas seulement la restauration de l'offenseur. Il concerne aussi la restauration du blessé. Quand c'est toi qui as été blessé, c'est toi qui dois faire le premier pas. Tu dois y aller. Tu dois parler. Tu dois confronter. Non pas pour punir. Non pas pour faire honte. Mais pour gagner ton frère.

Mais tu ne l'as pas fait. Tu es parti. Tu t'es fermé. Tu t'es isolé. Tu t'es dit que cela ne valait pas la peine. Tu t'es dit que tu étais humble. Tu t'es dit que tu te protégeais. Mais tu n'étais pas humble. Tu étais blessé. Et la blessure est encore ouverte.

Si tu as été blessé par l'Église, tu dois confronter cela. Non pas avec amertume. Non pas avec vengeance. Non pas avec médisance. Mais avec vérité. Tu dois nommer la blessure. Tu dois l'amener à la lumière. Tu dois être honnête sur ce qui s'est passé. Et tu dois rechercher la guérison.

Parfois, cela signifie y retourner. Parfois, cela signifie avoir une conversation difficile. Parfois, cela signifie pardonner à quelqu'un qui n'a pas demandé pardon. Parfois, cela signifie partir—mais partir guéri, pas aigri.

Voici la vérité que tu dois entendre : Dieu aime Son Église. Il sait qu'elle est brisée. Il sait qu'elle est pleine de pécheurs. Il sait que tu as été blessé. Mais Il ne l'a pas abandonnée. Et toi non plus, tu ne devrais pas.

Prière :

Seigneur, j'ai été blessé par Ton Église. Quelqu'un m'a profondément blessé. Je suis parti. Je me suis isolé. J'ai porté la blessure seul. Pardonne-moi de ne pas l'avoir affrontée. Pardonne-moi d'avoir laissé l'amertume prendre racine. Aide-moi à amener la blessure à la lumière. Aide-moi à rechercher la guérison. Aide-moi à pardonner. Et aide-moi à faire confiance à Ton peuple à nouveau. Au nom de Jésus, Amen.
