Why Bad People Prosper
Psalm 73:2-3 (ESV)
"But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked."
You have asked the question. Maybe not out loud. But in your heart. Why do bad people prosper? You see them at work, at school, in the news. They cut corners, manipulate, lie, and seem to succeed at every turn. They do not follow God. They do not care about holiness. They mock what is sacred. And yet, they are healthy, wealthy, and comfortable. They seem to have no problems. Their children are thriving. Their businesses are growing. They are celebrated and honored. And you, who have tried to follow God, are left wondering, "Why them? Why not me? Is it even worth being faithful?"
You have looked at the world and asked the question: Why do the wicked prosper? They lie, cheat, manipulate, and walk away with everything. They do not follow God, yet their lives seem blessed. And you, who have tried to be faithful, are struggling. The question is as old as the Psalms. But the answer is found in the sanctuary.
The psalmist felt this struggle. He said: "But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked" (Psalm 73:2-3). He was honest. He was wrestling. He was about to lose his faith because he could not make sense of why the wicked prospered. He looked at their lives and saw no suffering: "They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind" (Psalm 73:5). He saw their pride, their violence, their mockery of heaven. And yet, they had everything.
He almost gave up. He said: "All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence" (Psalm 73:13). It felt pointless. Why obey God if it does not pay? Why serve Him if the wicked get all the rewards?
But then something changed. He said: "When I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end" (Psalm 73:16-17). In the sanctuary, he saw the big picture. He saw their end. He saw that their prosperity was temporary. He saw that they were standing on a slippery slope. He said: "Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin" (Psalm 73:18). Their success was not a sign of God's approval. It was a sign of God's patience. And their judgment was coming.
You have been looking at their prosperity and missing the big picture. You have been looking at today and missing eternity. The wicked prosper now. But their prosperity is temporary. It is a vapor. It will be gone in a moment. And they will face the judgment they have earned.
But you—you have a different end. The psalmist said: "Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory" (Psalm 73:23-24). You are not like them. You are with God. He holds you. He guides you. And He will receive you to glory.
So do not envy the wicked. Do not let their prosperity make you bitter. Do not give up your faithfulness because they seem to succeed. Their success is temporary. Your reward is eternal.
Prayer:
Lord, I have envied the wicked. I have looked at their prosperity and wondered why. I have questioned whether it is worth being faithful. Forgive me. Help me to see the big picture. Help me to see their end. And help me to see my own—I am with You. You hold me. You guide me. And You will receive me to glory. I will not envy the wicked. I will trust You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Pourquoi les Méchants Prosperent
Psaume 73:2-3 (LSG)
"Toutefois, mon pied allait chanceler, mes pas étaient sur le point de glisser ; car je portais envie aux insensés, en voyant le bonheur des méchants."
Tu as posé la question. Peut-être pas à voix haute. Mais dans ton cœur. Pourquoi les méchants prospèrent-ils ? Tu les vois au travail, à l'école, dans les actualités. Ils prennent des raccourcis, manipulent, mentent, et semblent réussir à chaque tournant. Ils ne suivent pas Dieu. Ils ne se soucient pas de la sainteté. Ils se moquent de ce qui est sacré. Et pourtant, ils sont en bonne santé, riches et à l'aise. Ils semblent n'avoir aucun problème. Leurs enfants prospèrent. Leurs affaires se développent. Ils sont célébrés et honorés. Et toi, qui as essayé de suivre Dieu, tu te demandes : « Pourquoi eux ? Pourquoi pas moi ? Est-ce que cela vaut vraiment la peine d'être fidèle ? »
Tu as regardé le monde et posé la question : Pourquoi les méchants prospèrent-ils ? Ils mentent, trichent, manipulent, et s'en sortent avec tout. Ils ne suivent pas Dieu, mais leurs vies semblent bénies. Et toi, qui as essayé d'être fidèle, tu es en lutte. La question est aussi ancienne que les Psaumes. Mais la réponse se trouve dans le sanctuaire.
Le psalmiste a ressenti cette lutte. Il a dit : "Toutefois, mon pied allait chanceler, mes pas étaient sur le point de glisser ; car je portais envie aux insensés, en voyant le bonheur des méchants" (Psaume 73:2-3). Il était honnête. Il luttait. Il était sur le point de perdre sa foi parce qu'il ne comprenait pas pourquoi les méchants prospéraient. Il regardait leurs vies et ne voyait aucune souffrance : "Ils n'ont aucune part aux souffrances humaines, ils ne sont point frappés comme le reste des hommes" (Psaume 73:5). Il voyait leur orgueil, leur violence, leur moquerie du ciel. Et pourtant, ils avaient tout.
Il a failli abandonner. Il a dit : "C'est donc en vain que j'ai purifié mon cœur, et que j'ai lavé mes mains dans l'innocence" (Psaume 73:13). Cela semblait inutile. Pourquoi obéir à Dieu si cela ne paie pas ? Pourquoi Le servir si les méchants reçoivent toutes les récompenses ?
Mais ensuite, quelque chose a changé. Il a dit : "Quand j'ai réfléchi là-dessus pour m'éclairer, ce fut une souffrance à mes yeux, jusqu'à ce que j'eusse pénétré dans les sanctuaires de Dieu, et que j'eusse pris garde au sort final des méchants" (Psaume 73:16-17). Dans le sanctuaire, il a vu le tableau complet. Il a vu leur fin. Il a vu que leur prospérité était temporaire. Il a vu qu'ils se tenaient sur une pente glissante. Il a dit : "Oui, tu les mets sur des lieux glissants, tu les fais tomber et les réduis en ruines" (Psaume 73:18). Leur succès n'était pas un signe de l'approbation de Dieu. C'était un signe de la patience de Dieu. Et leur jugement venait.
Tu as regardé leur prospérité et tu as manqué le tableau complet. Tu as regardé aujourd'hui et tu as manqué l'éternité. Les méchants prospèrent maintenant. Mais leur prospérité est temporaire. C'est une vapeur. Elle disparaîtra dans un instant. Et ils feront face au jugement qu'ils ont mérité.
Mais toi—tu as une fin différente. Le psalmiste a dit : "Je suis toujours avec toi, tu m'as saisi la main droite ; tu me conduiras par ton conseil, puis tu me recevras dans la gloire" (Psaume 73:23-24). Tu n'es pas comme eux. Tu es avec Dieu. Il te tient. Il te guide. Et Il te recevra dans la gloire.
Alors n'envie pas les méchants. Ne laisse pas leur prospérité te rendre amer. N'abandonne pas ta fidélité parce qu'ils semblent réussir. Leur succès est temporaire. Ta récompense est éternelle.

Seigneur, j'ai envié les méchants. J'ai regardé leur prospérité et je me suis demandé pourquoi. J'ai remis en question s'il valait la peine d'être fidèle. Pardonne-moi. Aide-moi à voir le tableau complet. Aide-moi à voir leur fin. Et aide-moi à voir la mienne—je suis avec Toi. Tu me tiens. Tu me guides. Et Tu me recevras dans la gloire. Je n'envierai pas les méchants. J'aurai confiance en Toi. Au nom de Jésus, Amen.
