The Prayer You're Afraid to Pray
Luke 22:42 (ESV)
"Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."
There is a prayer you have avoided. You know the words. You have heard them preached. You have sung about them. But you have never truly prayed them. Because you are afraid. Afraid of what God might do. Afraid of what He might ask. Afraid that if you surrender your will completely, He will take you somewhere you do not want to go. He will ask you to give up something you love. He will lead you into a season of discomfort. He will say "no" to the dream you have been clinging to. So you keep the prayer at a distance. You admire it from afar. You quote it in church. But you do not mean it.
The prayer you are afraid to pray is the prayer of Jesus in Gethsemane: "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done" (Luke 22:42). Jesus was facing the cross. He knew what awaited Him—the betrayal, the mockery, the nails, the abandonment. And He prayed for another way. He asked if the cup could pass. But then He added the words that changed everything: "Not my will, but yours." He surrendered. He trusted the Father. He chose obedience over comfort. And through that surrender, He saved the world.
You are afraid to pray those words because you think surrender means loss. You think God's will is always harder than yours. You think He is waiting to take something from you. But you have forgotten that God is good. His will is not cruel. His plans are not to harm you. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." His will is better than your best plan. His path is higher than your highest dream. His purpose is greater than your greatest desire. When you surrender to His will, you are not losing—you are gaining. You are trading your small kingdom for His eternal one.
The prayer you are afraid to pray is the prayer that sets you free. It is the prayer that releases you from the tyranny of your own control. It is the prayer that opens the door to God's best. You do not have to be afraid. You do not have to hold back. You can trust Him. He loves you. He gave His Son for you. He will not lead you astray.
Prayer:
Lord, I have been afraid to pray that prayer. I have been afraid to surrender. I have been afraid of what You might ask. But I trust You. I trust that You are good. I trust that Your will is better than mine. I pray the prayer I have been afraid to pray: Not my will, but Yours be done. Take my plans. Take my dreams. Take my comfort. Take my control. I surrender. Do with me what You will. In Jesus' name, Amen.
May the Lord give you the courage to surrender your will to His, and may you discover that His plans for you are always better than your own. Have a blessed day.

La Prière Que Tu As Peur de Prier
Luc 22:42 (LSG)
Tu les as entendus prêchés. Tu as chanté à leur sujet. Parce que tu as peur.
Tu n'as pas à avoir peur. Tu n'as pas à te retenir. Tu peux Lui faire confiance.
