When Intercession Drains You Dry
Colossians 1:28-29 (ESV)
"Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me."
You have prayed for others until you had nothing left. You have carried their burdens, wept over their struggles, and interceded for their souls. You have stood in the gap for your children, your spouse, your friends, your church. You have labored in prayer for hours, days, weeks, months, years. And you are exhausted. Not just tired—drained. Empty. Dry. You have poured yourself out for others, and no one has poured into you. You have prayed for their healing while neglecting your own. You have interceded for their breakthroughs while your own prayers went unanswered. And you are beginning to wonder if intercession is even worth it. You are beginning to wonder if you can keep going.
Paul knew this exhaustion. He wrote: "For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me" (Colossians 1:29). The Greek word for "toil" is "kopiaō", meaning to labor to the point of exhaustion, to grow weary, to be worn out. The word for "struggling" is "agōnizomai", meaning to contend, to fight, to strive as in an athletic contest. Paul was not describing a casual prayer life. He was describing agonizing intercession. He was describing prayer that cost him something. He was describing prayer that drained him.
But notice what he says next: "with all his energy that he powerfully works within me." Paul did not intercede in his own strength. He did not labor in his own energy. He did not struggle in his own power. He interceded with the energy that Christ powerfully worked within him. The Greek word for "energy" is "energeia", meaning working, power, efficiency. It is the same root as our word "energy." Paul was not the source. He was the channel. The power was not his. It was Christ's. And Christ's power never runs dry.
When intercession drains you, it is because you have been interceding in your own strength. You have been trying to carry burdens that only God can carry. You have been trying to change hearts that only God can change. You have been trying to produce results that only God can produce. You have been laboring in your own energy, and your energy is limited. But Christ's energy is unlimited. His power never runs out. His strength never fails. When you intercede with His energy, you will not be drained. You will be filled. You will not be exhausted. You will be sustained.
Lord, I am drained. I have interceded for others until I had nothing left. I have carried burdens that were too heavy. I have labored in my own strength. Forgive me. Teach me to intercede with Your energy, not mine. Teach me to labor with Your power, not my own. Fill me with Your Spirit. Sustain me with Your strength. I want to pray without ceasing, but I cannot do it in my own power. Help me to pray in Your power. In Jesus' name, Amen.
May the Lord renew your strength as you wait on Him, and may you intercede with His energy that never runs dry. Have a blessed day.

Quand l'Intercession T'Épuise
Colossiens 1:28-29 (LSG)
